England claim their maiden World Cup crown in sensational win

Lords: England come out victorious in a nail-biting thriller as they finally bag the ICC World Cup 2019 maiden crown, routing the firm Kane Williamson-led New Zealand who fell short battling out for their first World Cup win at Lord’s on Thursday.

The super over decided the fate for the hosts who had closed their 50 overs with a tie, with Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler opening for them and scoring 15 with two boundaries.

Despite the early wickets the hosts’ destructive batting line took control of the inning chasing the modest total of 242 by the Black Caps.

This marks the third time England entered the World Cup final while the Kiwis had been the beaten finalists in 2015.

When England exited the 2015 tournament after an embarrassing defeat by Bangladesh, few tipped them as potential champions four years later but a revolution in their one-day game took them to the top of the world rankings.
